Surviving Winter is a campaign run by community foundations across the UK to help to combat fuel poverty, loneliness, isolation and holiday hunger. The programme raises money to help vulnerable people to stay warm and well over winter. Fuel costs are rising, and many people will have to face a choice between heating and eating. Many people who were 'just about managing' last year will now face hard choices.
We need your support to help those who are most at risk this winter.
We Need Your Help!
The Covid-19 Pandemic and lockdowns have brought home to us all the problems that many people face every year in winter, and even though there is no lockdown planned for this winter, the effects of previous lockdowns are still being felt.
In winter older people can become more isolated than usual, spending more time in their homes. They are less likely to travel, even for shopping and medical appointments, and interact with people far less than they usually would.
There are still many people that experience fuel poverty who have to make a daily decision about whether they will eat that day or have their heating on, and this can affect older people, children and families. Rising fuel costs and reductions in income have exacerbated these problems, and even though there are long-term plans to address these issues, many will face problems within the next few months.
Holiday hunger has also become more pronounced, and across the UK an estimated 8.4million people will struggle to get enough food to eat. This can affect working households, as well as those made up of older people, or those on low or fluctuating incomes.
Many people seem to be doing ok on the surface, but we know that behind closed doors it is a different story.
How can you help?
We have launched an appeal via JustGiving and a text donation scheme with Donr to raise funds so that we are able to support local community groups who will be supporting vulnerable members of our communities. You can help us by sharing our appeal and spreading the word of Surviving Winter 2021. The more money we raise the more people we can support.
Please consider donating to our appeal so we can help to fight the multiple issues facing some of the most vulnerable people across Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin. If you would prefer to donate by cheque please call us on 01743 295900.
We have also launched a text donation campaign with Donr. You can text SWSHROP to 70450 to make a donation of £5.
